  • Original story follows:

The world has never been a perfect place, but recent months have brought several issues to the surface that have been stirring beneath the surface for long before 2020. While we were all certainly excited for the PS5 reveal on June 4th, Sony has made the decision to postpone the event:

While the Coronavirus continues to wreak havoc and cause unprecedented damage and tragedy, the ongoing protests around the world against racism, inequality, police brutality, and the murder of countless innocent people of color, are an even larger issue that’s finally reached a boiling point.

We often play games to escape, I know I certainly do, but these are issues that can no longer be ignored. At the end of the day, we’re all gamers and we’re all people, regardless of our origins or the color of our skin.

We support Sony in this decision, and offer our own hope that the voices who have so long cried out for help and change will finally be heard. Through all of this uncertainty, pain, and strife, we pursue the kind of lasting changes that our world and our society needs to truly move forward as a species.

The Future of Gaming is About to Be Revealed

A short teaser video announced the event on the morning of May 29th, 2020. Shortly after that, the PlayStation Blog posted an article from Sony boss Jim Ryan that gave us some details about the plans for this upcoming PS5 Reveal Event.

From the sounds of the article, we are looking at the first games showcase for the next generation, similar to what Microsoft did for their first Xbox 20/20 event. Sony’s event, however, could show both first and third-party titles.

Also, the article says the event will be just over an hour in length. That’s plenty of time to make some big announcements! I would love to see more details on the console, release date, or price, but we shall see if those are mentioned.

The article ends with the promise that this is part of a series on PS5 updates and claims there is more to share.

As part of a separate interview with The Verge, Jim Ryan also shared an interesting bit of news about PS5 games:

“We have always said that we believe in generations. We believe that when you go to all the trouble of creating a next-gen console, that it should include features and benefits that the previous generation does not include. And that, in our view, people should make games that can make the most of those features,”

“We do believe in generations, and whether it’s the DualSense controller, whether it’s the 3D audio, whether it’s the multiple ways that the SSD can be used… we are thinking that it is time to give the PlayStation community something new, something different, that can really only be enjoyed on PS5.”

While I do like backwards compatibility, I agree that a generation should have its own merits and give gamers the kind of leap they’re looking for. Hard to do that when you’re anchored in the past.

Hopefully that means that we will see some truly next-level experiences in this upcoming event! My thinking it that Sony will start giving us more consistent teasers instead of dropping all the news at once.

In the meantime, make your own predictions for the PS5 Reveal Event in the comments!
